These are the good old days
By Reid ten Den, Discover Year graduate
Over the past year at Discover Year, I’ve had some pretty incredible experiences. I’ve experienced some of the most fun times of my life—from meeting everyone at orientation, to the DY social events, to staying up until midnight chatting with my new friends at DY. I have also had some of the most meaningful conversations of my life, whether it be during micro-coaching sessions, roundtable discussions, or one-on-ones. It’s been amazing.
One of the major lessons I learned during my Discover Year happened on my road trip through Alberta during our February travel period. So many people hope that their life will be smooth, straight and narrow down one path. Unfortunately, that probably won’t happen—but the key is to just embrace it.
During my road trip, I faced a ton of unknowns. I took wrong turns, got lost, and experienced unexpected situations. But eventually, when I started to embrace it, then I intentionally took indirect routes to my destination. Instead, I took backroads and paths less travelled by. By doing that, I had some pretty amazing experiences. I saw beautiful things that I didn’t expect, and met kind and interesting people. These are the parts of the trip that I remember the most—the parts that I didn’t plan for.
I believe the same goes for life. Enjoy the journey from where you are now, and you’ll eventually get to where you want to be. And one day, you’ll look back and think, “Oh man, those were the good old days!” Discover Year helped me realize that we’re experiencing “the good old days” right now—so make the most of it!
